Thanksgiving is almost here! The holidays are all about togetherness and tradition with family members and friends. No matter how much fun it is to sit in front of the television and watch the Lions and Cowboys battle it out against their opponents, it is infinitely more fun to play a game in the backyard with the family in the brisk fall air. Already an annual tradition for many families to pass time while the turkey and other treats are cooking, why not spice up the game a little bit this year by making t-shirts for the big event! Whether it is touch, flag, or tackle football, game t-shirts add excitement to the friendly competition of the day.
Depending upon the local climate, Thanksgiving may or may not be a chilly day. However, it is smart to be prepared for a cold November afternoon; so long sleeve shirts are probably the best option. Without an exact forecast, it might be a better idea to instead prepare with a basic short sleeve t-shirt one or two sizes too large for each player, so the team t-shirt can be worn over everyone’s regular jackets and sweatshirts.
Team t-shirts help to unify all family members and build holiday spirit, no matter what each player’s individual skill level may be. With matching t-shirts, each person now has the appearance of its best player. This is extra fun for children who get to play on the same team as the very athletic aunt or uncle, or with a relative they otherwise look up to. The annual family football game is the best way to ring in the holiday season while reconnecting with family members, as teammates and in friendly competition. Sports traditions are a healthy way to have fun and make memories, and every family member can get involved, whether playing, keeping score, cheering on the sidelines, or taking pictures for the photo album.
If the team’s captains are not already a set in stone tradition, such as Mom versus Dad or the two eldest sons, pick them ahead of time when all the family members are confirming their travel plans and times. This will build excitement leading up to the big day, and it will help with the t-shirt preparation. Plan t-shirts ahead of time in two different colors and hand them out on the day of, or have more fun by making them on game day or the night before if everyone is in town. They can be decorated with iron-ons, fabric markers and crayons, puffy paint, etc, just make sure to leave enough time for the design to dry.
The team t-shirts could all be decorated the same way, with phrases such as, “Adams Family Thanksgiving Turkey Tag Football 2011.” If the teams are always the same, with a huge rivalry, it might be fun to surprise the other team by making t-shirts as one team and looking more together than the other side. Or be nice, and make different t-shirts for both sides. “Mom’s Team – Reigning Champs since 2005,” is a friendly reminder of which team tends to dominate the Thanksgiving football game.
The holiday season is the perfect time to be together. Thanksgiving is always more fun with a football game among extended family members, or friends sharing the holiday together. Running around burns calories before dinner and it builds up a strong appetite for the delicious meal. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks, visiting with family and friends, and eating good food. So have a happy and safe holiday; hopefully the weather is nice so the pro football players are not the only ones who get to have football fun this Thanksgiving Day!
